I’m Tonny Ochieng, and I’m here to welcome you to my little corner of the internet. Based in the beautiful lakeside town of Homa Bay, Kenya, I’m a freelance translator with a passion for languages that goes back to my teenage years. I was that kid who couldn’t get enough of novels. I devoured them, one after the other, losing myself in the worlds of fantasy. I even tackled the Bible, when I ran out of stories to read. Those tales ignited a spark within me, a passion for words and storytelling that would shape my future.

So, let me tell you how it all began.

In the year 2015, I found myself working for a humanitarian organization, albeit in a different role. At that juncture, the organization faced an urgent need to translate their research documents into Luo and Swahili to ensure they resonated with the local audience. Fortunately, I had a solid foundation in translation as part of my communication background. It was a pivotal moment when I decided to channel my language and communication skills towards this pressing task. Despite the organization’s best efforts, they couldn’t find a suitable translator quickly enough. This is when I made a crucial decision – I raised my hand and volunteered to take on the task of translation.

From that point on, there was no looking back. It’s almost like a cliché, but they say, “the rest is history.”

My specialty in this vast world of translation is medical communication. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with both big and small Language Service Providers (LSP) on a range of tasks, from translation to editing, proofreading, and linguistic validation. Companies like TransPerfect, ICON, and Translators Without Borders have been part of my journey.

But wait, there’s more to me than just translation. When I’m not turning words from one language to another, I’m either attempting to put my thoughts on paper (yes, I’m a bit of a writer too) or diving deep into the world of books and movies. My love for storytelling goes hand in hand with my passion for languages.

So, why this blog? Well, it’s simple. I want to share my experiences in the language services industry with you. I’ll take you behind the scenes, share some tips and tricks, and maybe even sprinkle in a few personal anecdotes along the way.
